Sleep Carries You Away

When you were a baby, I was always there
to hold you every day,
Until the sandman came to call
and sleep carried you away.

Where do you go, my sweet baby mine,
When sleep carries you away?
Is it a magical nursery filled with kisses and love,
as you lay and coo all day?

When you were a toddler, I chased after you,
as we played the "silly" game.
Soon, you'd begin to rub your eyes
and sleep carried you away.

Where do you go, my sweet baby mine,
when sleep carries you away?
Is it hundreds of miles of toys and fun
surrounding you as you play?

When you were a teen, I gave you more space
to try to find your own way.
Each night I'd get my "peck" on the cheek
and sleep carried you away.

Where do you go, my sweet baby mine,
when sleep carries you away?
Is it a never ending party with all of your friends
hanging on every word you say?

And where did you go, my beautiful son,
when you were taken from me on that day?
Is it a breathtaking paradise of unspeakable joy
where beautiful angels play?

Do you walk next to Jesus on a street paved of gold
with relatives leading the way?
This is my dream as I lay down each night
and sleep carries me away...

This is really beautiful. I love the way its put together, and emotion in it. It reminds me of the number 4.

Wow, that's the only word I can think of to say, just wow. I don't think I've ever read a poem that almost brought me to tears, but this one did. Amazingly well written and emotional.

Oh my...this is so beautiful. And the emotion it displays, I have tears in my eyes. Something we, as parents, all hope never happens...we outlive our children. So so beautiful and so very sad.

I can tell that this poem was written from the heart, and written with passion and meaning. In other words, it's alive. Enyaw is a great poet. I love reading her poems. Keep it up girl!

  8. Julian Schürholz says:

"If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I know THAT is poetry. If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know THAT is poetry. These are the only ways I know it. Is there any other way?" -Emily Dickinson-

    That's all I can say.

    Well done, Enyaw! Seriously!
