Columbus and You

Columbus and You

Once upon a time, Columbus sailed the seven seas.
Dispelling myths and embracing his optimal curiosity.
Italian born but under contract for Spanish domain,
For better or for worse, surrendered to Great Britain’s claim.

America, Americus or Asia is reason to relearn history’s ABC’s.
Admiral, six hundred years later, ignorance is still in the lead.
Misguided politicians and suffering citizens still walk among us today.
As power has passed and spread much like a Shakespearean play.

Shakespeare, your players suffered from deception, doom, dishonor and death.
Americans, we are players losing due to demand, distribution and an intangible deficit.
No doubt, we share the heart of a united nation.
I strain to give voice to our blind dedication.

For, I also see purple mountains, green hills and yellow valleys.
Yet, I wonder who else realizes they are our closest allies?
I, too, am a foreigner in this warring nation.
Like Columbus, I seek God’s graceful creation.

My lack of knowledge continues to ask emphatically,
Do you still work for her Majesty?
For, if I were to tell you the world is round?
Would you believe me if I was white, yellow, black or brown?

Remember, I have also stood on the shores of Tripoli.
And protested when the world tried to play the same tricks on me.
I believe Columbus once sailed that flat sea.
I too am the hyphenated American that has come to be.

AMERICANS, can’t you hear my plea?
We are the same people with the same history.
Do you still play roles in Shakespeare’s despairing fate.
Or are you the revolutionarily conscious who passionately participates?
