dying of the light

here i thought we were driven to competitive excellence
but we just try to get by
so what do i tell the children,
do i tell them we have lived a lie?

so much for the american dream
do i have to eternally scream
at the horror of the dying light,
do i have to rage against the dying of the light
when all men become lovers
of themselves, ashamed to admit they are brothers?

(I cite Dylan Thomas' Go not Gently into the Dark Night
"rage, rage against the dying of the light". For him it is about dying kicking and screaming with vitality, for me it is about being humanly decent or all life means nothing.)
