Changing Time

Getting mocked by the grandfather clock
that sits in master’s den. Whispering in our ears:
“Down in the South, freedom is a comin’
So out on dem fields keep on a hummin’ ”.
First, the Emancipation Proclamation then the Civil Rights Act.
No doubt in the world that Black was back on track, with
no lack of respect and a smack of great prospects.
From “Black Power” to “ I Have A Dream”
we have come so far, or so it seems.
Now we mock the grandfather clock
that sits in master’s den. Whispering in his ears:
“Ding-Doong” we said “you were wrong
for our people have re-defined the word strong”.
