thirteen ways of looking at life
I
Parents glimmer as you
Enter this world, should
Have been more prepared for
Not just one, but two.
Life; sharing your blood
So that she won’t be blue.
II
Cuddled, soothed, comforted
When you shed tears.
Hugged, kissed, embraced
When you beamed smiles.
Life; capturing emotions
To store into files.
III
You have your mother’s determination,
Your father’s discipline. Two qualities;
Two qualities that you
Were blessed with.
Life; never having to
Plead the fifth.
IV
There’s no word to
Describe a sibling’s love.
Its bond is hard to demolish
And its strength can knock out the willing.
Life; standing as one,
Proving that it’s worth the killing.
V
Innocence all around and
Never far. Stare up at the stars
And wish on that shooting
One. Have dreams.
Life; reaching for anything, even
If it takes you to the extremes.
VI
Pink hearts and Barbie dolls,
Sometimes tools and trucks.
Ponytails and make-up,
Always giggles and lots of fun.
Life; how many other things are
Better than a girl? None.
VII
Awful years. Completely and
Utterly terrifying years.
Hormones are flying and no one is safe.
Beware and be prepared.
Life; apologizing to those you
May have scared.
VIII
Decisions and choices are
Yours to make. Prove yourself
Now and respect will follow.
Mistakes are a given.
Life; remembering that
You will always be forgiven.
IX
Ha, ha. Now’s not the time to
Be so serious. Stress from
Responsibilities weigh us down.
We never knew how fast we would grow up.
Life; sitting back and drinking
The freshness and warmth of this cup.
X
Every time he looks at you,
Your heart nearly collapses.
The wedding is memorable and
Glamorous. Timeless.
Life; spending way too much
On the perfect dress.
XI
Holding her in your arms,
Her precious smile and you cry.
The two of you are in awe,
Rocking her till she falls asleep.
Life; enjoying the moments
That you don’t hear a peep.
XII
Natural born instinct. God
Created man. He made woman
Because of all of the mistakes He made.
Never take that for granted.
Life; nothing will ever be more enchanted.
XIII
That’s it. There’s just
One more thing to say.
Listen, to me carefully:
Close your eyes and pray.
