Bear Hunter
I once heard a story
was told to me as true,
so I'll tell it now
and then you will know it too.
It seems this lad had had a look
and so he'd found a lair,
then he crawled inside this here hole
and grabbed on to a bear.
It was so small and even cute
he thought it would make a nice pet,
so he stuck it in a burlap sack
and went home to do just that.
But on the way the cub had plans
of another sort,
he chewed a hole in the sack
and his head came out with a snort.
Well the lad had walked for quite a piece
and didn't want to lose his pet,
so he hurried on his way home
and no more trouble he met.
He built a cage for the little bear
and thought that it would tame,
and I suppose that after a time
he even thought of a name.
But there's a code that's known by man
but not always by a child,
you can't tame a bear they say
because of the call of the wild.
The bear it grew and the cage got small
and still the bear didn't tame,
he did about all he could think to do
so we tied him up with a chain.
There came a day when the lad was away
but the bear he had become fond,
and when he came home to see his pet
he found that the bear was gone.
I don't know if he ever again
tried to tame a bear,
but I've heard that it's a dangerous game
to crawl into a lair.
It's the way the story was told
I hope it made you glad,
you see it happened a long time ago
and the boy he was my dad.

Oh, wow! You have a unique talent for poetry that's short and sweet. I can definitely see this published with some artwork and made into a short book. Very cute and sad as well.
